“Rainmaker” is described by WordWeb as an “American Indian medicine man who attempt to make it rain”.
As much as I agree with the “…making the rain” part, I don’t think it’s entirely true when they say its an “American Indian medicine man…”
I just returned from my home town for my elder brothers wedding and as much as there were loads of fun and experience (for my own turn at least), I was really captivated by the “rainmaker” we hired. Its important to hire one for occasions during the raining seasons if you don’t want rain to mess it up.
The “rainmaker” was not an American Indian but a sickly looking old lady. She looked so fragile and her speeches were at best, uncoordinated. I think she must have had downs syndrome or something when she was a baby. She could pass for a beggar or a destitute or something. However don’t let the looks confuse you, she is a god; a rain god at least. She decides when it would rain and when it won’t. She can talk to the clouds and the rains move to another town or venue. And here’s the fun part, if she gets angry, then thunderstorm will follow. On Friday night, during the Bach Eve, someone mistook her for a mad woman and called her names when she came close to the person and in a matter of seconds, maybe a minute or so, it started raining heavily. No one knew what happened. We looked for her everywhere but did not find her. Initially we were too drunk to notice the rain but the thing hammer us so tey the drink commot for our eyes. We eventually found her and she told her story. We had to give her 1000 naira and Kolanuts to appease her and it was clear skies again.
I started investigating (as Sherlock Holmes wey I be) about rainmakers generally and i heard its hereditary. No one can learn the trade. Its inborn, passed from generation to generation. The person either accepts it or become useless for the rest of their lives. They charge about 3000 naira for any occasion. I don’t think that can hold them all through the year. They cant do any other thing apart from talk to the rains and the clouds. It’s a nice power to have but I wonder what the rainmakers usually do during the dry seasons. Just curious.

Hmmmnn!!! I always thot rainmakers where characters in 'story-time' tales so it's quite hilarious to actually hear about one. Anyhoo welcome back.
Rainmakers!!! Yes i've always known de existed, infact i believe it cos my uncle was a rainmaker. Yep! from my fada's side and wen we axd him to hold the rain for a big party my parents were having in the village since d weda looked dull. We paid him, he went upstairs and stood by d balcony and looked up to d sky and mumbled some tins. And u won't believe it but my uncle d rainmaker was paid n fed but the rain fell cats, dogs and elephants. So em ... u were lucky, give me her digits so i call her sometime ok!.

Somebody controlling the clouds? Somebody made out of flesh and blood just like you and i? talking to the rains? Ah-ah! somebody please tell me this dude's just jokin'!
LOL!!! really i never thought about what they do during the dry seasons.
@jaybabe-its no joke. people can do that back in 9ja. I don't know how they do it. I found it hard to believe at first because i believe only God can control the skies but my mind got changed when we had a house opening party during the raining season in 9ja & my dad called this old man to stop it from raining on that day. To cut the long story short, i started believing from that day.
Interesting thoughts. I'll come back here for more. Keep them coming.
For me, rainmaker, in business sense, is one who creates profit out of business that were never thought to work at all.

Rain maker??? I'm a rain maker... I can make ALL kinds of rain!!
In Boarding school, it was the guy who pissed at night from the top bunk.
Plus am generally wary of american definitions
@dScribe, ur very funny.
I kinda liked the last statement you made, Obi. How can they 'send down the rain' during summer.
And, can they play for tricks, maybe you wanna mess up somebori's occasion, can they accept to play?...*smiling mischievously*
Btw, where's ya village. I may have reason to hire her very soon!
are u serious about all this?
lol @ jaja....that was funny...
I have always found it fascinating the people who find that they have certain gifts and manipulate events to their own benefit. Like as if, God was sleeping rain started to fall and then u want to change things. I wonder what sort of psychic issues she has set in motion. I definitely do not want one at my wedding or anywhere around me for that matter.
If it rains on a day I have selected for an event, then I take it as showers of blessings.
@ nyemoni... exams were not fine sha. i dont think i will pass
@ i am a babe.. seeing (sorry, hearing from grand ma) is believing. i always knew anyway but had no proof
@ 2ndCor5:17.... ur own better oooo
@ jaja..... lol
@ ugo.......yep, people do try to mess up other peoples occasions, thats why everybody hires theirs so they can counter it
@ exschoolnerd... i'm dead serious
@ catwalq..... i agree with you.if i had an occassion here in the city, i wont bother, but down the village u need it, cos it could get nasty out there

Rainmakers? Wow, that is crazy. I have never actually seen one before. That is a strong power to have.
I hope you had fun at your brother's wedding.
BTW, I wanna see a rainmaker and actually test his/her powers.
@ overwhelmed..... seeing is believing. i did not believe before now too but i have seen andi have believed.
@ naija saphire.... u will have to travel down to the east to see them oo. Even Fadeyi Oloro has those powers, at least i saw it on TV.. lol
HHAHAHAH... im laffing, because back then when we went for my dad's funeral, same scenerio occured, but this time these rainmakers didnt charge 1000 aria.. its funny sha...maybe during dry season they will be sun makers....what do u think?
